Sharing the Aroha — Gisborne Herald
With the aim of reducing food waste in Tairāwhiti, a community initiative named PikUp was born.
Supported by local impact house Tāiki e!, the group has picked up 5.5 tonnes of food (mostly fruit) from people's backyards over the past year that otherwise would have gone to waste.
“It's all about sharing the aroha with our community,” PikUp's Josh Cohen said.
During a rangatahi workshop last year, a group of youths identified the ongoing waste of good food from homeowners' backyards.
